Practice Beats Theory: Why Choosing the Right Martial Arts Instructor Is Crucial

Satirical depiction of an unqualified martial arts instructor as a clown holding a sign: „Offers self-defense without qualification”

The martial arts and self-defense industry enjoys enormous popularity worldwide. But with the rapid growth of the scene comes a global structural problem: there are no uniform, internationally binding quality standards for instructors. The mere designation as „Trainer”, „Coach”, „Sifu”, „Sensei” or „Master” is not legally protected and therefore not an automatic guarantee of sound qualifications.

Anyone who wants to learn self-defense places their personal safety in the hands of a teacher. But if the foundation – the expertise of the instructor – is built on false premises, the resulting training can only be flawed.

The Illusion of Competence

There have been repeated documented cases worldwide where alleged instructors or even grandmasters were exposed as having no authentic training whatsoever. Such people often act more like actors, merely playing the outward role of a teacher without being able to demonstrate the essential, profound parameters of martial arts.

For the layperson, this difference is barely recognizable at first glance. Therefore, it is essential to question the training landscape critically. Three significant problem areas characterize today's times:

1. The Deception of Weekend Certifications

Many trainers today acquire their qualifications only in two-day compact seminars. Such a weekend, completed for a corresponding fee, can never replace years of in-depth study of biomechanics, distance awareness and conflict psychology.

2. Online Graduations Without Live Correction

A growing phenomenon is instructors who have gained their knowledge and diplomas almost exclusively through online courses. They lack the essential live training experience under the watchful eyes of a real mentor. Without hands-on correction in practice, fundamental errors creep in and are then passed on to students unchecked.

3. The Lack of Real Stress-Testing Practice

Understanding martial arts in theory or through cooperative partner drills is not enough. Anyone who has never applied techniques under real, uncooperative pressure inevitably conveys a false sense of security.

What Parameters Make a Real Instructor?

Since there are no international norms, verifiable, real-world experience must be the standard. Prospective students should look closely during a trial lesson and question the instructor's expertise:

  • Where did their training come from and how long did they study?
  • Has their system ever been tested in a full-contact ring?
  • Does the instructor have field experience in operational security?
  • Have they successfully applied their knowledge in real, dynamic conflict situations?

Only a teacher who has himself been ”under fire” for years has the necessary parameters to pass on working concepts for real emergencies authentically and responsibly.

The Alternative: Real Experience at CFC

Practice beats theory. This principle is the immovable foundation at CFC. Students here are not taught untested theory, but in-depth knowledge that has been proven over decades.

Training in Villach is led by Sifu Erich Ferlesch. He has practiced Wing Chun intensively since 1995 – across various lineages, styles and masters. This profound technical foundation rests on martial arts experience since 1990 – put to the test under full contact in the ring (Lei Tai) and proven across 25 years in operational security (personal, event and property protection) in countless real security situations.

At CFC, it is not about sport competition, but about pure, real self-defense on the street for real emergencies. Anyone who wants to learn effective self-protection needs a teacher with real substance.
